DJI, a class leader in drones like DJI Neo and gimbal-based camera systems have just announced the all new DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. With its powerful next generation 1/1.3” image sensor giving you amazing image quality. There is also 13.5 stops of dynamic range support which is a feature often found on some of the best DSLR cameras from manufacturers like Sony, Canon or Insta360 Ace Pro, on the market. There are dual OLED touchscreens which are both the front and rear screens to be able to view your exposure scene with excellent sharp and vibrant color reproduction. You can then focus on your photoshoot or vlogging session without having to be distracted by images in your peripheral view.
Thanks to the amazing image processor you can record in 4K HDR or High Dynamic Range with HLG support with 10-bit D-Log M, giving the user accurate, clear and sharp details. The Osmo Action 5 Pro has some tremendous new features such as 47GB of internal storage and support for SD cards up to 1TB to add to that built in storage. This new camera sort of mimics the action camera of a GoPro such as the GoPro Hero 13 Black, with superior features as a great waterproof (with case) and lightweight camera. Having an action cam like this will help your vlogging skills and let you get a great handle on photographing fast action scenes like sporting events, or streetscapes.
This new camera has features and specs which make it a nice upgrade over the DJI Osmo Action 4. Below we will have a DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro review, which will get more in detail with the specs, features and why this camera is a great addition to your photography stable.
This is an extremely lightweight and portable fast action camera weighing in at just approximately 5.5 ounces, and it is waterproof down to about 66 feet which can be increased with the optional waterproof case to a depth of almost 200 feet.
Battery life is provided a larger 1950mah battery which can take 4K video at 60FPS for approximately 120 minutes and can shoot in 1080P or Full HD for up to 240 minutes. Meaning you have plenty of time to record a great vlog session. With fast charging time of approximately 3 hours to fully charge a battery, having a spare battery would help with this, as you could swap the battery while the other one charges. One additional footnote is that the battery can be fast charged for 15 minutes which will give you 2 hours of shooting time.
The dual OLED screens with up to 1000 nits of brightness, allow you to focus on what is on your subject through the screen without having to take your eyes off the scene. This is great when shooting fat action scenes or even selfies, as you can huddle up with your friend for some great selfie shots while viewing what the image will appear as through the OLED touchscreen.
While this camera is great for filmmaking as well, it is important to note some of the new features which lend itself to this endeavor.
Stabilization on the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is greatly assisted to get a rocksteady performance, with minimal to no shake and blur which we often find associated with handheld shooting.
There is Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi AX and Bluetooth 5.1 included, so you can pair your Android or Apple iPhone Smartphone to your camera and download the DJI Mimo App. The DJI Mimo app offers some tremendous features that you should not pass up. You can do a lot with post processing and editing of your images and video recordings with the app and get them ready to easily share with your friends, loved ones and subscribers to your social media page.
The camera features the powerful 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor which can capture 40MP of gorgeous photography supporting a resolution of 7294x5472 (a 4x clarity boost over the Osmo Action 4), even in low light conditions. There is a super night mode which uses algorithms to further brighten your videos for superior low-light performance. With super night mode engaged you can record 4K video content at a maximum of 60FPS.
The image sensor also has great noise reduction capability to help sharpen and clear your exposure and remove gradation and noise which may detract from the overall image quality of your still image and video recordings.
Slow motion shooting in 4K is also part of the appeal of the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. This can even be achieved at 120FPS for a blazing refresh rate. There are also a Hyperlapse and Timelapse features as well for unique shooting exposures.
Subject tracking has been added to this action camera to help ensure that the main subject of your vlog or photoshoot remains in constant focus. Regardless of whether you are photographing in vertical or horizontal mode, your subject will be automatically tracked by the camera system in the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. The camera will also automatically adjust the composition of your subject to remain sharp and clear even during those fast action scenes.
The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has a built-in pressure gauge to keep you constantly informed of your depth when going underwater. There should be a visible improvement in image quality with this feature as well, as the camera will adjust settings to keep up with your depth.
ND filters or neutral density filters on this new camera controls how much light enters the sensor and can adapt to your shooting environment. There is also the availability, as found on the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, of an Expansion Adapter for wearing the device as well as a plethora of other accessories like the DJI bluetooth GPS remote, extension rods and others to assist with your image and video recordings.
The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro can record images in both JPEG and RAW formats. RAW captured images will give you more post processing and editing options to put the finishing touches on your final exposure.
The compatibility with the DJI Mic 2 has just what a vlogger or content creator is looking for and is a great addition to this new camera. This mic comes with omnidirectional audio recording, which is optimized to accurately capture your voice during vlog sessions. This mic will work great in crowded loud scenes (even a rock concert) you can achieve high quality audio recording in mono or stereo format.
Pairing with the DJI Mic 2 is simplistic with an easy seamless bluetooth pairing connection. You can also wire the mic to the camera with the USB-C port or use a 3.5mm Aux jack.
This new camera can be purchased in the standard combo or adventure combo configurations. The adventure combo adds the following accessories to your purchase: 2 Extreme Plus Batteries, a 1.5mm extension rod, and the multifunctional battery case. The standard combo is just the camera with one Extreme Plus Battery.
With an improved camera system, better battery life and superior specs surpassing the GoPro and Insta360 capabilities, this is the action camera you should claim as part of your photography equipment. Don’t miss out on this action camera, which was made for sale by DJI in September 2024, whether for yourself or as a nice holiday gift with the holiday season approaching.
