TV Buying Guide

So you are ready to buy a new TV, now we can provide some guidance on the TV you purchase and what to do and what not to do.

  1. Start by doing research into a new OLED, QLED or Mini-LED UHD TV. At this point in the Smart TV market, there are great deals to have on LED TVs or one of the kind listed above. Therefore, even if you are on a budget you don’t have to get an oldset technology TV like an LCD picture TV.

  2. Do not purchase a TV without knowing where your planned placement of the TV will be in your Living Room. To deteremine the right screen size and how many inch TV, you need, check what your seating distance will be from the TV. This way you can accurately measure the stance from your couch to where the TV may possibly be wall mounted and once you know your seating distance, you can see what size TV is recoomended.

  3. Ensure that the HDR setting on on your TV is set to automatically detect the incoming video source and set it to the highest setting like HDR 10 or Dolby Vision. That way you can ensure that you are getting great picture quality. Do not change the HDR settings from Dolby Vision if set to that automatically.

  4. Use the built in Wi-Fi of your TV to connect to your home router. Most modern TVs will have at least the Wi-Fi standard of Wi-Fi AC or (Wi-Fi 5) Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi AX. If you have a Wi-Fi 6 capable router connect to it’s third band if it is a Tr-Band router. This is usually the fastest band on your wireless spectrum (typically defaults to channel 153 on the router). With Wi-Fi AX you can also open up the 160 ghz channels to use for congested areas as the speed is outstanding.

  5. Don’t use your TV out of the box without having expert calibration done. Best Buy geek squad can do this for you. It will ensure that you get a great picture quality and every pixel shines though with accurate, vibrant and sharp details and colors.

  6. One of the items that you can either change manually or can be corrected during expert calibration is what is called the soap opera effect or motion smoothing. This is usually how the TV is set up out of the box for retailer shelf viewing. However, this has been a long fought cause in Hollywood, because when the soap opera effect is being used, it can make content seem fake and not a natural way to get a good viewing experience. This is especially trure for content that was orginally filmed with lower refresh rate such as 24FPS or 30FPS. So make sure to turn off motion smoothing prior to usage.

  7. Don’t leave your new TV on it’s legs placed on stand when you can get one of these great wall mounts to have your TV placed on the wall for a true home theater viewing experience. This will have the TV screen placed at a higher plane than on a stand, so you can have the best viewing angles when multiple people are watching TV. However, you want to make sure not to mount your new TV to high or you may not get a good viewing angle which would result in a poor viewing experience.

  8. Do not get the wrong type of HDMI cable. Having a new faster HDMI cable with the 2.1 standard is needed to get the best refresh rates for your UHD viewing experince. This will also be needed for gamers, so if you attach an older HDMI cable you may not get all the features available on your TV like eARC or (Enhanced Audio Return Channel). The faster HDMI cables usually have a Gold colored ending pirce to insert into an HDMI port. If you want to get the best possible 4K UHD HDR viewing experience, don’t skimp on the HDMI cable. We also recommend to get a braided cable to for extra security and longetivity.

  9. You don’t have to feel locked into the remote control that comes with your new TV. You can look at some amazing universal remotes that can not only control yout TV but even attached devices like a blu-ray player or gaming console. That being said, the best new TVs usually come with a remote control that can be used universally, especially when you activate CEC-device control. This will allow your remote to control up to 15 devices through CEC and make your TV watching so much easier.

  10. When you attach a gaming console like the Sony playstation or the Microsoft XBOX, you don’t want the picture set to Movie which is what we recommend for TV viewing, you want to set it to Vivid. This will help gaming action pop on the screen with great color and sharpeness. This viewing setting is great for fast action scenes found in competative online gaming. Many TVs like the TCL 6 series come with a feature called “Intelligent Settings”. By activating this, your TV will automatically adjust the picture setting to accomodate the amount of natural light in your room. When the TV is set to Vivid, you get a good viewing experience even in super bright rooms.

  11. Speaking of gaming consoles, do not attach it to an HDMI port that does not support 120 FPS. As the latest gaming consoles have a library of games that are 120 FPS HDR supported. And you will want that kind of refresh rate for the best gaming experience.

  12. Do not set your TV where there may be a glare from a window showing on the TV screen. This will degredate your picture quality and will detract from your watching shows or gamaing.

  13. Don’t forget to use the TVs bluetooth to pair your Android or iOS device to. Then you can cast from your phone or use Apple AirPlay from iOS devices to play music or viewing content on your TV.

  14. Don’t feel locked into the speaker system of your new TV. Even though most of the best new TVs have Dolby Atmos supported built in speakers, you won’t get that loud immersive surround sound that a new A/V receiver or soundbar will give you. We highly recommend getting one these options to pair with your new TV for the best sound quality.
